Myths & Facts About Women's Self-Defense...that every woman should know

Updated: Mar 5

Myth #1: Your age, size, weight, and fitness level will somehow prevent you from being able to learn how to deflect, escape, or subdue an attacker in a real-life situation.

Fact: Self-defense techniques are not solely reliant on physical strength. They focus on leveraging your body's natural abilities and learning effective strategies to protect yourself, regardless of your physical attributes. With proper training and practice, anyone can acquire the skills necessary to defend themselves effectively.

Myth #2: "It won't happen to me" is naive and fearful of the unknown.  Just as touching a hot stove and pretending it will not burn you... denying the magnitude of your risk will not reduce your danger or prevent you from becoming a victim.

"Violence won't happen to me"

Fact: It is important to acknowledge the reality of potential threats and take proactive measures to ensure personal safety. By recognizing the importance of self-defense training and being prepared for any situation, women can empower themselves and increase their chances of avoiding or effectively responding to dangerous situations. Remember, it is always better to be prepared than to regret not taking action later on.

Myth #3: "Violence against women will never end; it's just a fact of life women must accept." No, it won't end unless women begin defending themselves.  You are not contributing to violence by defending yourself; you are taking control of your own safety.

Fact: By learning self-defense techniques and being aware of one's surroundings, women can reduce their vulnerability and potentially deter potential attackers. Additionally, advocating for societal changes and supporting organizations that work towards ending violence against women can contribute to creating a safer environment for all.

Myth #4: "Self-defense techniques are only for physically strong individuals."

A woman's size does not matter in self defense

Fact: Self-defense is about using strategy, awareness, and leverage to protect oneself. It is not solely reliant on physical strength but rather on knowledge and skills that can be learned and practiced by anyone. By equipping oneself with self-defense techniques, individuals of all physical abilities can increase their chances of staying safe in dangerous situations.

Myth #5: "I don't need to learn self-defense because I live in a safe neighborhood."

No woman is safe from violence

Fact: While living in a safe neighborhood can lower the risk of certain crimes, it does not guarantee complete safety. Dangerous situations can occur anywhere, and having the skills to defend oneself can provide an added layer of protection and peace of mind, regardless of the location.

When you consider the reported facts:

  • Every 9 seconds, a woman in the United States is assaulted.

  • Every 107 seconds, a sexual assault occurs.

  • Every day 3 women die from acts of violence.

It is crucial to recognize that no woman is immune to violence, and taking proactive measures to protect yourself is essential to your personal safety and well-being.
