6 Ways Exercising Is Like Being In Love

The Word Love with Hearts

You know it's good for you to work out. Your weight stays in check, you get stronger, you feel young, and you can stay active into old age. But did you know that working out makes you feel the same way that being in love does? Exercise makes you feel happy and satisfied.

No matter if you're single, married, have a partner, or are still looking, this Valentine's Day, get up and move around. LOVE YOURSELF!

These six things are why exercising feels like love:

Woman Happy Chemicals to Brain

1. Exercise releases happy chemicals into your brain.

Neurotransmitters in the brain release dopamine, a chemical that plays a part in happiness. Dopamine is the same chemical that is released when we fall in love.

A lot of research shows that as we get older, we keep losing dopamine. That's why we need to keep looking for things that make us feel good.

Stressed Woman

2. Exercise helps you feel less stressed.

Working out will help you deal with stress in the short term by making you sweat out your problems. But regular exercise will also help you deal with stress in the long term. Similar to having a life partner to talk about your problems with, unless they are the ones making you stressed!

That's because working out raises your heart rate and causes a burst of hormonal changes, which is a low-level form of worry. Being stressed out by exercise for a long time will make your body better at dealing with other stresses in life.

Plus, less stress makes life better and happy.

3. Exercise gives you energy.

There will be days when you just feel too tired to work out.

But no matter how tired you are from a long day at work, taking care of your family, or resting from a busy weekend, give it your all and work out. You'll  feel more energized afterward than before. Like being happy and content yourself makes your other half happy, too.

Like being in love, happiness goes up when you have more energy

4. Exercise makes you feel better about yourself.

It's very easy to have low self-esteem when you don't like your body or the way you look. Those things can hurt every part of your life, including your relationships, your job, and your hopes and dreams. This is where being in love and having a partner who loves you can help you feel more confident (or at least it should!) The way you feel about yourself can change when you start working out and see your body change. No matter how you look, working out will make you feel better. It will also make you stronger, more independent, and more sure of yourself.

Women with anxiety

5. Exercise eases anxiety.

New research on the effects of exercise has shown that for people with anxiety, the short-term mood boost from exercise is followed by longer-term relief, similar to what you'd get from meditation and talk therapy, or from being in a loving relationship where you can talk about your worries in an open and honest way.

So the next time you're stressed, work out hard. You'll feel better for days.

6. Exercise helps you sleep.

Not able to sleep?

When two people are in love, they usually sleep better (unless their partner snores!)

Don't take a sleeping pill-work out!

People who have trouble sleeping or who have a sleeping disorder can sleep better if they stay busy and work out regularly. Regular exercise can also give you the boost you need to get out of bed and do things in the morning. And that always leads to more happiness.

Work out, be happy, and love yourself.

When you're sad, lonely, stressed, or nervous, don't sit on the couch. Instead, get some exercise.  You'll be healthier and happy for life, plus you'll feel more confident, ready to go, and calm.
